Description
This amazingly comprehensive reference on advanced knee reconstruction covers the complete gamut of topics, ranging from adult reconstruction techniques and revision to arthroscopic and cartilage restoration techniques, that commonly fall under sports medicine.
Purpose
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons partnered with the Knee Society to create not just another reference, but a comprehensive surgical guide that will assist surgeons in planning and carrying out specific surgical procedures or managing difficult clinical problems. This is an interesting twist on the classic concept of a reference, and as I went through any number of focused chapters in the six major sections, I saw that they had accomplished this goal by laying out each chapter in sequence, covering indications, contraindications, alternative treatments, results, and techniques as well as pearls to avoid pitfalls and postoperative guidelines.
Audience
The target audience includes residents and fellows in training to practicing and established knee surgeons. I can easily see my residents and fellows turning to this book before every major case. Indeed, I and many of my colleagues with years of experience will find this book a go-to reference for cases that we may not see on a daily basis. Chapters are authored by an impressive cadre of contributors, yet each one follows the same format enabling readers to easily follow along and know what to expect from one chapter to the next.
Features
My favorite feature is the uniform chapter format that makes this book an efficient technical guide. Indications and contraindications, alternatives, techniques, and rehabilitation are covered in each chapter. The video supplement is a welcome addition to this technical reference, since as we all know, if a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth a lot more.
Assessment
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to read, review, and use hundreds of knee books. Some are heavy on basic science, some are purely picture books, and each has its place in the literature. This is a wonderful reference and surgical aid for how to safely prepare for and perform a myriad of techniques for knee reconstruction. It will be an efficient review prior to your next surgical knee reconstruction. I am sure if I share my copy with the resident library, I will never get it back. It will quickly become the most used book on knee reconstruction in any institutional library.
